Cut Velvet Damask
Figured velvets like this damask from Italy, are woven on a jacquard loom. Fine metal wires are woven into the fabric where that raised pattern is to appear. The loops formed on the wires are cut with a special knife, leaving the motif in velvet pile on a flat woven ground. This pattern features a pile damask on a subtle leopard ground. Same fabric front and back.
