Antique batik tulis from Java. Using a fine copper tool called a canting, the artist draws the design on both front and back in melted wax. Subsequent dye baths and hot water washes to remove the wax create the designs, each of which is particular to the artist. This piece is traditionally colored in soga brown and indigo and includes the graphic triangular design of the end of the sarong as well as the peacock motif on the reverse.
